Fifth Wheel Safety Equipment

Your fifth wheel trailer is your home away from home, and like you do at your residential home, you’ll want to keep some safety equipment on board for emergencies. Fires, brown-outs, bad tires and inconsistent water pressure are all concerns you can prepare yourself for with the right equipment. Also, in the event you become stranded, you should have supplies on hand so you can call for help and survive in adverse conditions, particularly when dry camping at a secluded spot. At Lone Star RV of Houston, we know the importance of safety equipment and emergency preparedness on any recreational vehicle trip, so we’ve prepared the following list of items you should consider adding to your trailer before your next journey.
Surge Protectors
Your fifth wheel likely contains some nice appliances and electronics which can be damaged by black-outs and brown-outs caused by faulty RV hookups at campsites. Adding a surge protector to your power hookup cable set-up is a good way to save your electronics in the event you plug into a bad powerbox.
Fire Extinguishers
Fires are always a danger around any heat sources and campfires can sometimes overstep their bounds unexpectedly. You should outfit your fifth wheel with a few fire extinguishers, one in the kitchen for cooking fires and one in an outer storage compartment that you can grab quickly if your campfire suddenly tries to spread. Depending on how large your fifth wheel is, you may want to include a third one in another convenient location, like the main sleeping berth or somewhere it can be quickly accessed in an emergency.
Emergency Radio
While your cell phone is a great communication device when you’ve got a signal and sufficient power to charge it, you might be dry camping in a secluded spot that doesn’t give you enough of a signal to call for help if something goes wrong. A hand-crank radio is a great tool to have on hand so you can listen for emergency information about inclement weather. Most of these devices also have USB ports for charging devices so you can get a call in, as well as flashlights if the power goes out. Having a few other flashlights on hand is always a good idea, too.
Tire Pressure Monitoring System
Your tires support your whole rig and a fifth wheel is a particularly heavy trailer style, so it’s vital that you keep all its tires well-maintained and evenly pressured. Using a tire pressure gauge to manually check them is one way to make sure there are no slow leaks, but another method involves installing a tire pressure monitoring system that will let you see information on your tires’ pressure and temperature whenever you want it. This device also keeps track of your tires’ condition over time, letting you know if you have slow leaks, uneven pressure or other issues so you can get your fifth wheel into a service shop posthaste.
Water Pressure Regulator

The water pressure at RV parks can be notoriously unreliable, meaning that your pipes could be damaged by water pressure that isn’t suited to what they can handle. To avoid expensive plumbing repairs, install a regulator that maintains your water pressure at one constant. This can make your showers and sinks run more evenly and gentler instead of blasting water out at high pressure.
