When people move into a new house or apartment, the first thing they usually do is get to work making it feel more like home. And yet for some reason, when it comes to RVs, many are comfortable with the decorations that come stock. People treat their RVs like they’re a tent on wheels when they should treat their RV like a cabin that’s waiting for them wherever they go. This brief guide is filled with tips and tricks for making your travel trailer or toy hauler more homey. At Lone Star RV, we’re always happy to help people make their RV experience better. If you need advice or RV supplies, don’t hesitate to stop by one of Lone Star RVs two Houston, Texas locations!
Use Your Personal Style
It always looks best to put your own personal spin on decorating, and with your travel trailer, the same rules apply. A good place to start is picking a theme such as “hunting cabin” or “cottage by the lake.” Whether you like a more a rustic look with rich fabrics and textures, or a light and airy look that feels clean and simple, a theme can be very helpful for decorating. Or, if you prefer, you can try to match the decorations to the way your permanent home is decorated. Either way, if you come at it with your own personal palette and preferences, you’ll get away from the stuffy look of straight-from-the-factory decorations.
Fill it With Personal Mementos
Most people cover the walls of their homes with pictures of family and friends. They have keepsakes and mementos on their shelves, and they place little personal touches that mean something to them. These can help make a toy hauler or travel trailer feel more homey, too. A few pictures of children, parents, or other relatives can be a welcome sight if you ever find yourself getting road weary. Plus, since you’re travelling, it’s great to keep some of your keepsakes from each stop in your trailer to remind you of the trip.
Lighting
Lighting, like everything else in a travel trailer, is made for efficiency and little else. For example, LED lighting is a common feature of most modern trailers. Unfortunately, LED lighting is neither the warmest or most welcoming of lights. A few residential-style desk lamps or candles can make a huge difference in how your trailer feels. You can even use flameless candles if you like, which provide the look, feel, and sometimes even the smell, of normal candles, but without the danger of a flame. Anything you can do to soften the light will make a big difference.
Throw Pillows, Rugs, and Drapes
One of the easiest ways to add a pop of color and softness is to add some new throw pillows or drapes to your RV. Throw pillows can be very expensive, and there’s no need to break the bank in this department. Simply find a few pillows that add a welcoming color or texture. Drapes are another way to really upgrade the look and feel of your travel trailer. You can make drapes yourself without the need for even a sewing machine, and to paraphrase one popular late 1990s comedy, a rug really ties the room together! Try to find some harmony between your drapes, throw pillows, and rug.
Paint
Many toy haulers and travel trailers come painted in the most neutral color palette one could dream up. This helps maintain broad appeal for many people, but it doesn’t do much for making an RV feel cozy. Upgrade the color with a fresh coat a paint. You can just do one flat coat, or you can add accent and trim colors, a wall of bold, unique color, or any other scheme you like. Just make sure to air your RV out after you paint it as the paint fumes can get a little bit harsh due to the confined space.
Green

If you want to add some real life to your trailer, bring in houseplants! Not only do they look great and feel more organic, they also help to refresh the air by absorbing carbon dioxide. If you don’t feel like hauling around a live plant, you can always bring flowers or greenery from wherever you’re camping. If you’re going to be going out to nature, why not bring some of it into your RV? You can add a vase of daffodils to your dinette in spring, or a bold arrangement of juniper and sage if you’re travelling through the desert.

Hopefully this short guide gave you a few ideas about the many, many options that exist for making your travel trailer or toy hauler more comfortable.
