Travel Trailers are phenomenal RVs; they’re easier and more fuel efficient than their larger cousins, they’re every bit as spacious, and even allow you access areas heavier or over-sized RVs can’t reach. However, nothing ruins weekend plans or faster than a improperly maintained travel trailer. If the tires are low, the interior hasn’t been properly ventilated, or the seals or slideouts haven’t been lubricated, you’ve now got costly and time-consuming maintenance to perform before you can take to the open road. Lone Star RV wants your next traveling vacation to be a blast, which is why we’ve put together a list of simple regular maintenance checks you can perform to keep your travel trailer in peak condition! Visit our dealership today in Houston, Texas and let our staff help you prepare for your next adventure!
Ventilation
Ventilation is one of the easier challenges to manage when it comes to proper RV maintenance. It’s a pretty common practice for RVers to stow their travel trailer completely buttoned up when it’s not in use, however this practice can slowly degrade your RV. In extreme heat, the inside of a sealed RV becomes a veritable oven, which can start to cause fading and crack plastic and rubber components. On the flip side, cool weather can lead to condensation, which will build up inside a sealed RV and create a perfect foothold for mold and mildew in your fabrics. Pick up some RV vent covers to prevent water from making its way into your RV, and leave your vents open a bit while your RV is in storage.
Seals
The seals around your windows and doors are critical to your comfort, Over the years these seals will inevitably start to break down. You can slow this process by rubbing them down with a dry silicone based lubricant, however sooner or later you’ll probably just have to replace them. Keep an eye on your seals by checking them about once or twice a year. A small crack is inevitably going to get larger so pick up a replacement and get the seal swapped out as soon as it becomes a problem.
Tires
RV tires almost never last as long as tires on a car. This is because extended periods of immobility coupled with exposure to the sunlight can start to cause dry rot that will eat away at your rubber. You can get protective coatings and covers for your tires to help extend their life, but they’ll almost certainly need to be replaced before the tread is worn down. It’s still important to check on the tread of your tires to get an idea of your RVs overall health. Uneven wear on your tires can be caused by several issues, including improper inflation, a bent axle, or a problem with the suspension of the RV. Make sure you keep your tires inflated to manufacturer spec, and watch for uneven wear so you can get a bad tire replaced and identify other hidden problems before they cause a hazard.

Slide Outs

Slideouts are one of the awesome evolutions that have popped up in travel trailers over the past few decades. If you enjoy the extra living space, then it’s important that you take care of your slide outs to prevent them from seizing up and grinding to a halt. If you start hearing a groan or creak while your slideouts move it may be a simple issue of lubrication. Use a dry silicone based lubricant along the length of the slide out rail and runner.

Remember, check your seals for wear or cracks, and keep your seals and slideouts well lubricated (it’ll keep them running smooth and prevent corrosion)! Keep your interior properly ventilated to avoid overheating and keep away mold and mildew and it’s a great idea to check the air pressure of your tires before and after every travelling vacation.
