This state park is a straight shot west on I-10 coming out of Houston, taking a little under an hour to reach. Located along the winding Brazos River, Stephen F. Austin State Park has six miles of hiking trails and a huge variety of campsites for a variety of different vehicles.
Its namesake is responsible for bringing the initial 297 families who colonized Texas in the early 1800s, so you’ll find historical monuments, statues and graves, as well as a replica of Austin’s cabin and a general store modeled after the original one built to serve the citizens in 1847. This makes for a fun and engaging educational experience for the kids!
An hour southeast of the park above, you’ll find another state park along the Brazos River. Brazos Bend State Park is only a 45-minute drive southwest from downtown Houston, too. The nature area has a great deal of swampland, which means you’ll want to watch out for alligators as you’re adventuring. Over 37 miles of trails are ideal for horseback riding, hiking and biking, and some are wheelchair-friendly for accessibility. Fishing on the Brazos River is a popular pastime here, too.
