There are many quality used RVs on the market, but there is the risk that a used RV will come with hidden issues that may cost a fortune in repairs.

How do you know the difference?

It can be tough knowing which used campers are a wise investment and which are not. That’s why we created the following buying guide. If you have any questions or want to shop for used RVs for sale, head over to Lone Star RV. Our dealership is located in Houston, Texas, and we also serve those in Katy.

Finding a Used RV

The first step is figuring out which used camper to buy. There are many ways to research models, but the following two are a great starting point.

First, read customer reviews. See what current owners are saying about their campers. Do they love the model and recommend it? Did they experience buyer’s remorse? Their insight can be a valuable resource.

Second, visit a used RV dealership. Spend some time looking over the various options. Walk around inside campers and see how much interior space your family needs, make note of any features that catch your eye, and so on. You can also chat with the dealer and see what models they recommend for your specific budget and travel style.

Considering a Used RV

Once you find a model that you are interested in, there are a few key steps to take.

First, ask questions. Learn as much as you can about the used camper. By learning about its past, you will be able to better predict its future longevity and performance. If possible, find out why the previous owner decided to sell the camper. Was it due to a problem with the RV, such as it being hard to tow or too cramped inside? Decide whether that problem will also be a problem for you.

Second, get a copy of any maintenance reports. See if the past owner or owners kept up with preventative maintenance. If not, the camper may be due for some big repairs or part replacements soon. Be sure to also look for red flags such as repeat maintenance issues or evidence that the camper was involved in a crash.

Third, inspect the used RV. It takes time, but it’s wise to conduct a thorough inspection. Look over the various nooks and crannies for signs of mold, pest infestations, rust, stains, and other types of damage. Some issues are purely cosmetic, but some can be problematic (and expensive to fix). Go through the various electrical components and test everything to ensure the wiring and other parts are in good condition.
